Sundowner Tradition

Sundowner Tradition

How did the sundowner tradition start, you may ask?

It dates back to the 18th century, but has gained value over the years – and in recent weeks: it’s no longer just a moment of celebration, but anticipated resocialization!

Originally a sundowner is a mid-afternoon drink that marks the transition from a day in the African heat into the calm of the night.

Back in the 18th century, the British in Africa were using quinine as a remedy for some symptoms of malaria. The strong taste of quinine, though, made it hard to swallow – not to say enjoy. That is when quinine was mixed with carbonated water and sugar, creating what we know today as tonic water – AND gin of course!

Elephant Gin is anchored to this African tradition, its source of inspiration and provenance. Not only in taste, but also in spirit.
We have captured this sundowner feel so that you can soon enjoy a moment of celebration and resocialization – wherever you are in the world.

We are launching our “Social Sundowner” sessions this year, so watch out for more!
